Philosophy has overwhelmingly approached climate breakdown in terms of the ethical obligations to the future which it is supposed to involve, but which when push comes to shove never seem effectively to constrain us. This review by John Foster of Rupert Read’s 2022 book Why Climate Breakdown Matters shows Read bringing philosophy to bear on the climate challenge at a prior level – helping us to confront it as an already present disaster, adequately addressing which could reconnect us deeply with ourselves.
